A Guitar Hero game for metalheads like myselfSince we all know the most fun genre of music featured in GH/RB games is the metal genre get ready to have a blast!!Unless you don't like metal. Then by all means enjoy the tracks 'The Boys Are Back in Town' from Thin Lizzy, 'Tuesday's Gone' from Lynyrd Skynyrd and a handful of other classic rock songs. So despite the game being metal-oriented there are still other tracks on the game that will suit other people's interests. The game's achievements are pretty well balanced, some easy ones (Create a custom tattoo, custom instrument, ect.) spanning out to some pretty tough ones (Earning 1 millions points on 'Battery' in band quickplay) and most achievements are easily obtainable by expert players, players who have the drums, guitar and mic, and players lucky enough to beat an expert+ song with only 1 kick petal (Me! )The careers are extremely short if you can get 5 stars on the songs and even if you can't get 5 stars on all songs you only have to beat about 15 of the 49 songs to beat the career and unlock the achievement.
Also Activision isn't going to release horrible DLC for this game unlike others.Ahem. (GuitarHeroWorldTour). So we wont feel guilty wasting Microsoft Points on bad songs.Overall, this game was a blast, and if your a Guitar Hero and Metallica fan this is a must buy! The charting in this game is by far the best of any previous GH title and features some of the longest songs of any previous title some spanning close to 10 minutes.
So let's recap:-Mega-awesome high scoring songs (check)-Easy achievements (check)-Great Online play as usual (check)-A kick ass time (check)So get out there and buy this game! I will admit, I was very sceptical when Guitar Hero Metallica came out.
Mainly because it was announced just a short time before the actual April 2009 release date. If you are in doubt of the quality of the game like I was, then you really shouldn't be.
It's Metallica for god's sake. What could possibly be wrong?!Career mode follows the same format introduced in World Tour. The game features 50 songs (which you can have a look at below), 29 of which are by Metallica, and 21 by other bands. A new 'Expert+' mode is featured for drums only, which includes Lars Ulrich's double bass style. You will unlock two songs to begin with (smash hits 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and 'The Unforgiven'). Those two are the only songs which you must complete in order to continue on. After you easily complete those songs, you will unlock a setlist of about 10 songs, and you only have to have 15 total stars between those songs to unlock the next setlist.
You can go back to any setlist at any time, which is convienent if you want to get stars off of the easiest songs. For a tougher experience, I dare you to try to get 5 stars on all of the hardest songs. You can only play as Metallica on their songs, but you can create a rocker in the revamped Create-a-Character mode. Metallica is unlockable to play on every song after you beat career. Unfourtounately, deceased bassist Cliff Burton and ex-bassist Jason Newsted aren't unlockable in the game.
Instead, current bassist Robert Trujilo is featured as a part of Metallica. The actual story behind the game is just your normal Guitar Hero story, not in-depth at all and completely animated. Keep in mind, Guitar Hero Metallica IS a full band game so full band career is possible. In short, career mode is your typical GH career, but with possibly the best metal band to date.GHM features a slightly different multiplayer experience. It still has the normal game types, including battle mode, faceoff, pro-faceoff, etc.
The battle mode power-ups don't carry their traditional names, but instead are named after iconic Metallica songs. All instruments are compatable with multiplayer, however you cannot face a guitar against drums, vocals against a bass, etc. Multiplayer is available on Xbox LIVE as well. Overall, really nothing new with multiplayer. The game also brings back the music creator studio that was introduced in World Tour. It has some new effects, and also features all of the original ones. The Music Studio isn't as in-depth as I would have like it to be, but you can work with what you've got.
Custom tracks are still available to download off of Xbox LIVE.The reason I like Guitar Hero Metallica so much is because, well, I'm a Metallica fan. The presentation of the game is great, with great graphics and note charts. I would have like to of seen hit tracks 'Blackened', 'And Justice For All', and a couple of others. GHM has more of a metal feel to it because of the dark note highways and some metal outfits that are available for your custom character, upon many more things.
I couldn't have asked for a better Metallica video game, and really like what Activision did. Originaly posted on Louciferspeaks.com under my other username Lord Konrad Chaos'Guitar Hero: Metallica: A real gem, but nothing special'One of the newer Guitar Hero additions, Guitar Hero Metallica sets out to correct the issues with World Tour, and smash Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. It does both of these very well. To start with, I'll admit, I'm a Rock Band guy. I've had an issue with Guitar Hero since GHIII, the setlist always seemed to have been chosen based on popularity rather than being a genuinley good song.

And World Tour had that problem, as well as feeling like it was trying to be Rock Band. But then they announced GH:M and I had a feeling it'd be a disgrace. Thankfully, I was wrong.Graphics - 9/10Technically, I can split this in two: Interface and Avatar, as the two are very different. I'll start with the Interface.I still looks like a Guitar Hero game, the main menu being a copy of the World Tour menu with Metallica plastered all over it. But here you can tell that the game just oozes with Metallica's feel and sound. The fonts are based on those used in the bands albums, the opening cutscene displays the album covers proudly. Even when you select something, a chord or two are played that are easily recognisable as from Master of Puppets.
The track when in a song again is very similar to World Tour. The main difference here is it tells you how many stars you've gained during the song, unlike World Tour, where you find out afterwards. The notes are the same round notes as every other GH game, and they use the slider bar introduced last game a fair bit. The tracks themselves are generally based on an album, such as St. Anger fists lining it, or Lightning down the sides. The Avatar aspect of it, by this I mean the band playing behind your track. These are done really well. It's fairly common knowledge that Metallica were brought in for motion capture, and it shows, playing a Metallica song is made even better because you know that in the background there, is how Metallica actually play that song live.
The character models look brilliant, Lars still looks like a bit of a douche, and Kirk is near enough perfectly done. James does look a little weird, they decided to give him huge cheekbones.Sound - 8/10The reason this has 8 rather than 9 or 10 (considering I'm a huge Metallica fan), is down to the support acts. The support act songs were'nt chosen because of how good they were, but rather because they were covered by, or had a song covered by, Metallica. They covered Stone Cold Crazy on their Garage Inc. Album, so it's in there. Notable exceptions are 'Ace of Spades' (probably chosen over the one they actually covered because 'Overkill' was on World Tour), 'The Boys Are Back In Town' was chosen over 'Whisky In The Jar', which annoyed me, I'll honest.Generally, you'll play through the supports to get them over and done with. They aren't as fun to play, aren't as good to look at and not the reason you bought the game.
That being said, there are a few gems in there, 'Hell Bent For Leather' by Judas Priest, 'Beautiful Mourning' by Machine Head and 'Evil' by Mercyful Fate are some of the better songs. But on to the reason you'd by the game. The songs were well chosen, from the obvious (Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, One) to the more unknown songs (Mercyful Fate, Frantic). Songs like 'No Leaf Clover' and 'Battery' I won't get bored of anytime soon, as they were done really well.
Overall, however, I think they could have added some more in, it's got one of the shortest setlists out there, since it won't support any downloadable content other than Death Magnetic, which is a big let down, considering the price for it (1,600MS).Gameplay - 10/10The gameplay hasn't changed since World Tour. Follows the same format since day one. But the addition of Expert+, which is only playable on Drums, and only on a certain percentage of songs, isn't a major one. Generally the drums are easier on this game than Rock Band 2, the guitar is a bit easier as well. The vocals are so far the easiest vocals I've had to do, but only on Metallica's songs, as James' voice is fairly monotone and easy to follow.
When you do some songs, 'Evil' and 'Hell Bent For Leather', then its difficult, as both King Diamond and Rob Halford are known for the high pitch of their vocals.Multiplayer has been improved, Star Power is easier to use in a full band, and you can tell who's causing you to fail the song alot easier than World Tour. Getting a game online isn't too difficult either, even a few months after release when the hype has died down. Although it's not easy getting a full 4 person band, which is frustrating, as it prevents you from getting some of the Achievments/Honours. Nobody seems to want to do vocals online!Replayability - 6/10With the setlist being small, and the lack of DLC, you'll get through the songs in due time. It's good to play when you have a few friends round, and especialy if they are Metallica fans, but otherwise, it wears thin quicker than World Tour and Rock Band 2. Once you have got all 200+ Stars per instrument, all that's left in online, which again, wears thin as you'll still be playing the same songs. And you easily work out which are the favourites (if I have to play 'Sad But True' one more time.).OverviewThis is a good game.
Simple as that. It does right what World Tour does wrong. But brings its own problems to the mix. The weakest part of the game is easily the support bands, unless your playing as a full band, or playing 'Evil' or 'Ace of Spades', the band are randomly generated. Maybe it's because I'm too used to Rock Band 2, where you can set people to stay playing, but that takes some of the fun out of it. The Create a Rocker is near enough useless, as you'll want to play a Metallica song more often than not, which means that Rocker you may have spent a while creating, would hardly be shown. This game is worth a rent if you already have the instruments. If not, I wouldn't suggest this as your main one.
GH:M is for those who are Metallica fans, and preferably those who already have a Guitar Hero game. I would get Rock Band 2 or World Tour first, then Metallica, as the small setlist really isn't worth it when buying the full band set.Overall: 8/10. 'Hey doominator, why do you punish yourself with godawful games?' This question has been asked quite a few times, both by people I know as well as people here on TA. So i'm gonna mix it up with one of my favorite games of this year. Now, I have to confess one thing right away, i'm a HUGE fan of Metallica. I'm wearing a Master of Puppets t-shirt right now, have every album, AND saw them live a month ago. I'm also a BIG guitar hero fan.
But I wasn't impressed by Guitar Hero Aerosmith whatsoever. But now it's got all the features from World Tour incorporated, so it has to be an improvement, right?Oh yeah. As soon as you start up the game you just see the opening credits while Metallica walks on stage. And no sooner after you see 'Guitar Hero Metallica' on the screen, it instantly starts up For Whom the Bell Tolls, (One of my favorite songs) a flawless transition. It all looks great, Metallica looks like Metallica, the sound quality is ace, the fans still look like ass but that's fairly typical from guitar hero. But it wouldn't be a good game without song selection, and GH Metallica nails it perfectly. The Metallica songs are excellent (it's got known hits like Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets, as well as fan favorites like Dyers Eve and Disposable Heroes) and the guest acts (Like Social Distortion, Motorhead, Kyuss, and SLAYER!!!) are phemominal choices. Every Metallica album is featured here, but there are far less songs from crap like Load and St Anger, and more from the early stuff (from Kill em all up to the Black Album)There are a few noticable songs missing, (My friends complained mainly about Four Horsemen and Ride the Lightning missing, I wanted Damage Inc personally) but what is here is extremely well chosen.
It makes you think the developers are huge fans as well. But what seperates Metallica from World Tour? Two main things: First off is the star counter, (Similar to Rock Band's) which tells you how close you are to that excellent 5. It's also a bar, which makes it easier to see than in Rock Band.
![Guitar hero 3 song list Guitar hero 3 song list](http://www.technogog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/windowslivewriterguitarherometallicabangyourhead-8084pdvd-019-2.jpg)
The second is expert+, a new mode for drummers which incorporates a second bass pedal. This is very difficult to get the hang of, but it's tons of fun once you get it down. Just don't go into Dyers Eve or War Ensemble with little skill. The career is also much better. As you earn stars, you can move up the gigs a lot faster. Lets say you want to play the heavy stuff like One (which is back from GH3.
HELL YES) but don't feel like slogging through the easy stuff, like Nothing Else Matters. Just play the songs you want (each setlist has about 50% Metallica and 50% Guest acts) and move up faster. To 'beat' a career you just have to obtain a certain amount of stars to unlock The Thing that Should Not Be (Great song, but weak for a final song) and beat it.You can technically blast through careers (with about 45% completion) but it's far worth it to savor every song. You can also unlock old school Metallica costumes, where they look dirty as hell and Rob looks like a janitor. Sadly, you can't unlock former members of Metallica (Like cliff.
That other guy) but they are mentioned in the Metallifacts, which contain very interesting titbits about the song. (I really didn't know Creeping Death was played live more than any other song) There are also behind the scenes videos, and offcial bootlegs. It just screams fan service.Achievements are straightforward, but quite tough. Most of them come from beating each and all of the instrument careers, getting band streaks and 100% as a band, or getting crazy scores on specific songs. Some of them (Like 570,000 on Creeping Death as a guitarist) are flatout crazy and have very little room for error. If you are good, you'll look at about 700 for this one, but expect to work hard to get the 1k.In short, even if I wasn't a big Metallica fan, I'd still consider GH Metallica one of the best in the series. If you hate Metallica or Guitar Hero, you'll probably pass, but not before I shove a drumstick up your nostril.
